‘World’s largest green hydrogen cluster’: TotalEnergies and Orsted in Dutch offshore wind bid

TotalEnergies said it will power “the largest green hydrogen cluster in the world” with offshore turbines if a joint bid with sector giant Orsted is successful in the latest Dutch tender for wind at sea.

The French supermajor and Danish offshore wind pacesetter confirmed they linked to enter the two-project, 1.4GW-plus Hollandse Kust West (HKW) round that closed this week.

As part of the bid TotalEnergies said “600MW of electrolysis capacity, the largest green hydrogen cluster in the world will be made possible by 2027, powered solely by the [HKW] wind farm” as it decarbonises its operations in the Netherlands’ Zeeland province.

The pledge follows an entry by BP to the same tender that promised 500MW of electrolysis in Rotterdam if successful.

Olivier Terneaud, VP offshore wind at TotalEnergies, said: “The energy transition brings new challenges, both in terms of environmental impact and integration of green energy into the power system.

“It’s precisely to meet these challenges that we’re participating in these tenders, together with Orsted, to support the energy transition in the Netherlands, where we draw on more than half a century of Dutch offshore operational experience to be a reliable energy partner.”

Fellow supermajor Shell is also a confirmed entrant to HKW, along with power sector players such as SSE and Vattenfall.

The results of the zero-subsidy HKW round are expected after the summer.

Hollandse Kust West forms part of an ambitious drive to roughly double the Netherlands’ offshore wind capacity to 21GW by 2030.
